Dr. Richard is actively involved in international philanthropic work as an affiliate of the Himalayan Cataract Project (http://www.cureblindness.org). He has traveled to Nepal, Ethiopia, and Cuba to provide medical care and training to local ophthalmologists. The focus of his work has been in Ethiopia where the Himalayan Cataract Project continues to support the formal training of Ethiopian oculoplastic surgeons by facilitating Ethiopian doctors to come to the US for an observership followed by hands-on training in Nepal. As of two years ago, there was only 1 formally-trained oculoplastic surgeon in Ethiopia for its 100 million inhabitants. The third Ethiopian oculoplastic surgeon will finish his training this year.
